Research: ‘Optimal Anxiety’ and Boredom in Science and in Theatre

I realised that we had never actually properly researched 'optimal anxiety', nor had we integrated any early reading we had done about boredom properly into our design. The following is a summary of my findings, and what architectural moves I suggested could use it effectively for affecting user experience. New Approach, New Moments, New Direction [Part 1]

After the rigidity of our previous scheme, we decided to try a more explosive scheme with more variation and atmospheric focus. The following explorations are in reaction to the lack of character in the first Masterplan - in order to explore 'anxiety' and 'boredom' in a more nuanced way, we decided to place these on … Continue reading New Approach, New Moments, New Direction [Part 1]

Masterplan 1 -> First 1:50 Plan + Section; Feedback From Tutor

The next step was to draw up our massing model as a 1:50 plan and section to show the our tutor spaces we have in mind within the greater structure. The act of observation is our main way of inducing 'anxiety' in students rehearsing, and we contrast this with more 'boring' spaces with less stimulus … Continue reading Masterplan 1 -> First 1:50 Plan + Section; Feedback From Tutor

Discussion Forum: Ornament or Crime?

This discussion forum is centered around ornament: what it is, how it can be used, how it is often an after-thought, and what its role is in contemporary architecture. We were asked to consider Vitruvius' Firmitas, Utilitas, Venustas breakdown of architecture, as well as read Adolf Loos' infamous Ornament and Crime essay, where he argues … Continue reading Discussion Forum: Ornament or Crime?

Brief for an Architectural Design Studio: Part 3

STEM -> STEAM CHOO CHOO. ALL ABOARD THE STEAM TRAIN. It is well-known that the Arts have been constantly undervalued by most educational institutions and society at large. Instead, STEM subjects - Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths - have dominated in funding and facility allocation. This has resulted in tension between university faculties, barriers in … Continue reading Brief for an Architectural Design Studio: Part 3

Brief for an Architectural Design Studio: Part 2

Serving Diversity The Albert Barracks Wall was built around the beginnings of Auckland, constructed by Maori against the possibility of a Maori attack that never came. The city developed, the remains of the wall absorbed by the country’s first university, unaddressed, and the space remains in a strange limbo between the past and present. Today … Continue reading Brief for an Architectural Design Studio: Part 2
