Relevant Site Analysis

Our main site considerations are:

  • Circulation routes
    • These are essential, as those walking past the Performing Arts Centre will create levels of ‘optimal anxiety’ in students through their presence and observation. It is also these passer-bys that we want to pique the curiosity of, in our acts of engaging with the wider university community. While we may manipulate these circulation pathways, understanding the existing main circulatory passageway and why people use this is crucial.
  • Congregation spaces
    • These are important for the same reason as circulation routes. There is also little congregation in the heart of our site, as there is little reason to stop in that particular grassy patch. As our project aims to engage the community, elements such as the amphitheatre could be a significant way to liven the spaces.
  • Trees
    • As we plan to complete some significant landscaping in order to fulfill points made above, we must be aware of the existing trees and, particularly, the protected species that we cannot move by law. Trees may also contribute to atmosphere, particularly in the ‘calm’ spaces, and influence shading (particularly important for spaces interacting with sunlight, such as the amphitheatre or glazed foyers).
