Draft Concept Exploration
The following are some quick concept explorations that I produced in preparation for Daven and I’s scheme for Mid-Semester Crit.
These examine different configurations of a foyer with moveable walls, the concept of a glazed ‘maze’, an amphitheatre, a black box theatre, and individual practice rooms, all within a mostly-linear gradient of ‘visibility and permeability’ to ‘privacy and solidity’ (anxiety and boredom, respectively).
I repeatedly began to place the ‘boredom’ rooms with greater solitude towards the top – this felt to be a natural way of achieving quiet further from the ground, and utilising nearby treetops as both a natural barrier and a calming presence. Arranging the gradient to be linear, even if ‘folding’ into itself, was the most effective way of interrogating the different spaces within it, as well as the thresholds between these. This was all suitably in line with what Daven and I had discussed together.
None of these are entirely successful on their own for a variety of practical, contextual or thematic reasons – rather, this was a way for me to sort through different ideas, discover combinations that work or do not, and bring these ideas to my partner.
